Description

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are rapidly becoming an integral part of India’s transportation ecosystem, shifting from a futuristic concept to a mainstream reality. Businesses, entrepreneurs and infrastructure developers increasingly view EV charging infrastructure as a high-growth opportunity.

The market context underscores accelerating demand across cities, highways, commercial hubs and residential complexes. The Government of India has set a target of 30% EV penetration by 2030, which will require approximately 1.32 million public charging stations—over 40 times the current installed base.

There are two main types of EV chargers: Alternating Current (AC) charging stations and Direct Current (DC) charging stations. The EV charging infrastructure can be classified as Private, Semi-public and Public.

Demand for eco-friendly transport is rising, supported by government incentives and the clear economic advantage of lower operating costs. The ride-hailing sector is witnessing rapid adoption of light commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and last-mile delivery EVs, which are critical for logistics and urban mobility. Additionally, EV taxis are also gaining traction as financial incentives reduce upfront costs for operators, making sustainable urban transport more affordable and accessible.

Hence, the electric vehicle (EV) charging ecosystem presents vast opportunities across diverse stakeholder groups including entrepreneurs and startups, commercial property owners, individuals leasing land, fleet operators, parking lot owners, residential communities, highway landowners, petrol pump owners, hospitality and retail businesses all of whom can play a pivotal role in shaping India’s clean mobility transition. Based on current industry trends, several location types stand out as particularly effective in driving utilisation, customer satisfaction and profitability. They are Highway Corridors, Fuel Stations, Hotels and Resorts, Public Transit Hubs & Depots, Retail Centres, Commercial Complexes, Office Campuses and Multi‑family Housing etc.

As of March 2026 (Data Source: Ministry of Heavy Industries data reported and answered on 27/03/2026 in Parliament), the North Eastern Region (NER) has installed 891 public charging stations, with 741 operational, accounting for just 3.2% of India’s total installed PCS. This stark infrastructure gap highlights both the challenge and the untapped investment potential for scaling EV adoption in the region. The region’s potential is further amplified by its eco-tourism appeal, renewable energy integration and cross-border trade corridors. The region’s hilly terrain offers economic and ecological advantages — greener vehicles can boost local employment, improve financial conditions and enhance tourism by preserving natural beauty and air quality.

Under the UNNATI 2024 Scheme (Uttar Poorva Transformative Industrialization Scheme), EV charging stations are officially classified in the Services Sector Positive List.
